Spaniard’s Bay Environment Committee Inc.

The Spaniard’s Bay Environment Committee Inc. is made up of a diverse group of volunteers who endeavor to make a difference in our community. Our mission statement is to identify, promote, pursue and protect the environmental health and beauty of our community while maintaining its natural charm and beauty through education, cooperation and the diligent efforts of committee and community. Our objective is to promote public participation in the enhancement and development of green spaces.

Grants in the amount of $5,000.00 each from the Department of Municipal & Provincial Affairs enabled us to complete two projects – Spruce up the Recreation Center and Brush Cutting at Tilton.

Funding was received from the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board to erect three signs as a educational tool for the public to use the 4 R’s – Reduce – Reuse – Recycle – Recovery. Our committee feels that this is a constant reminder to people to keep their property clean from debris and encourage them to plant trees and flowers. We also received funding from MMSB in the amount of $10,000.00 for the removal of car wrecks and other metals.

Our committee completed work on the All Saints’ Park in Tilton. A parking area was turned into a beautiful park by planting trees, building a wishing well and constructing flower boxes. Cost of this project was $9,900.00.

The committee held a “Tree Planting” dedication October, 2004 with Rev. Linda Budden, Mayor John Drover, Deputy Mayor Gerald Hiscock, three Tilton residents and Committee Members. This park is offically owned by the All Saints Church in Tilton.

The “Old Forge” site was turned into a park with two horseshoe courts, picnic tables and benches. Total cost of this park was $12,050.00

The committee acquired a piece of property on the oceanfront that had once been used to sell old vehicles and turned it into a park – The Phyllis Collins Memorial Park. The property was donated by Mr. Edward Collins in memory of his late wife Phyllis.
The cost to construct the park was $15,000.00.

The Crow’s Nest Lookout on Pike’s Peak has one of the most spectacular views on the island. The land for this project was donated by a former resident from the Pike Family and will be a welcomed addition to the community if we can secure grant monies from all levels of Governments. Still trying!

We want to have the general public and visitors understand and appreciate our resources and protect them for this and future generations. We need to make sure we meet the needs and preferences of all patrons by ensuring all our sites are well kept and visitor friendly so that they can safely enjoy and experience the natural beauty of what we have to offer.

• Our hidden treasures – Three natural waterfalls – The Gorge – Mill Brook – Goddenville Falls, Crows Nest Lookout on Pikes Peak, hiking areas, site of 565 million year old fossils, yet to be discovered by the public.

Project 2005
Funding from the Government of Canada under the Employment Insurance (EI) Account in partnership with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Market Development Agreement and the Gosse Family enabled us to construct a park with a cheap hydrocodone pills and an arbor. This park was dedicated on July 16, 2005 in memory of the Late Harold Fraser Gosse, a former Mayor and Councillor in Spaniard’s Bay. The site was the home of Mr. Gosse’s first garage in Spaniard’s Bay. Cost of this project was $48,000.00 +

We encourage all residents to take that extra step in keeping their properties clean and green, plant trees and flowers, we want our community to be a showplace as people drive along the Baccalieu Trail for a Sunday drive.

The Spaniard’s Bay Environment Committee each year has a student and on a weekly basis clean along the shoreline and the Mini Park on the ocean being mindful of leaving a buffer zone for the nesting wildlife. Students are learning the importance of saving the wetlands and will be advocates for a cleaner community as they see first hand, the mess of litter after one weekend or season. They also learn that one leaves a buffer zone around the edge of the rivers and lakes and do not disturb any item that is encrusted with wildlife.

Our committee is dedicated to working with all levels of Government, the Town of Spaniard’s Bay, the business sector, the community as a whole and our volunteers and will take on the challenge of the restoration or enhancement of any area that is in keeping with our mission statement and will endeavor to secure funding for these projects.

The beautiful painting of the “Holy Redeemer Anglican Church” in Spaniard’s Bay was won by Mr. B. Hedderson. Painting was painted by David Clarke and donated to the Spaniard’s Bay Environment Committee as a fund-raiser.

Volunteers Grow Communities!
The importance of volunteering and the shear numbers that do volunteer in all aspects with so much expertise is a valued commodity.

The stats show that the “volunteer sector” employs two million people and has another six million volunteers with two billion volunteer hours annually being given; eight billion dollars donated per year in Canada with generated annual revenues of 112 billion dollars and 5.7 billion comes from Atlantic Canada. Our Environment Committee could not function without the many volunteer hours that are committed by the members and help from the Town staff and Council.
